The RAV4 is one of the best selling SUVs in America, and fuel economy is a big reason why. But the answer to “what gas mileage does a RAV4 get?” depends on the year, the powertrain and even the trim.

A 2026 RAV4 Hybrid can be rated as high as 43 mpg combined. An older gas-only RAV4 sits closer to 30 mpg. That gap adds up to hundreds of dollars a year at the pump.

This guide covers the official Toyota RAV4 gas mileage for every model from 2019 to 2026, so you can compare new and used models side by side.

Quick answer: The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is hybrid only and gets an EPA-estimated 38 to 43 mpg combined, depending on trim and drivetrain. From 2019 to 2025, the RAV4 Hybrid got 39 to 40 mpg combined, the gas model got 28 to 30 mpg, and the RAV4 Prime plug-in got 38 mpg on gas plus 42 miles of electric range.

All ratings are EPA estimates. Your real mileage will change based on how and where you drive.

2026 Toyota RAV4 MPG: The New Hybrid-Only Lineup

The sixth-generation RAV4 arrived for 2026 with a big change. Toyota dropped the gas-only engine, so every new RAV4 is now a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid.

The standard hybrid uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors. It makes 226 horsepower with front-wheel drive and 236 horsepower with all-wheel drive. For the first time, you can get a RAV4 Hybrid with front-wheel drive, and that version is the most efficient.

LE, SE (AWD)463942
XLE Premium (AWD)453841
XSE, Limited (AWD)433741
Woodland (AWD)413538

The XSE and Limited lose a little because of bigger wheels and extra weight. The Woodland drops further because of its all-terrain tires and rugged setup. Even so, the least efficient 2026 RAV4 Hybrid nearly matches the best older hybrid.

If you are still choosing a grade, our full breakdown of RAV4 trim levels explains what each one adds.

2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid MPG and Electric Range

The plug-in model used to be called the RAV4 Prime. For 2026, Toyota renamed it the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. It comes standard with all-wheel drive and makes 324 horsepower, making it the quickest RAV4 you can buy.

Electric range is the big upgrade. The old Prime was rated for 42 miles on battery power. The new model goes further:

Plug-in Hybrid gradeEPA-estimated electric range
SE54 miles
XSE52 miles
Woodland49 miles
GR SPORT48 miles

Once the battery runs low, the plug-in works like a regular hybrid. Toyota lists gas-only ratings of roughly 37 to 41 mpg combined, with the SE and XSE at the top of that range and the GR SPORT at the bottom. Check the final EPA label on the FuelEconomy.gov RAV4 page for the exact grade you are shopping.

RAV4 Hybrid MPG by Year (2019 to 2025)

The fifth-generation RAV4 Hybrid ran from 2019 to 2025. Every one of these hybrids came with all-wheel drive and a 219 horsepower hybrid system. Toyota RAV4 hybrid gas mileage stayed very steady across this whole run.

The city and highway numbers never changed. Only the combined rating dipped by one mpg for 2024 and 2025.

2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid MPG

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid MPG rating is 41 city, 38 highway and 40 combined on every trim: LE, XLE, XLE Premium, SE, XSE and Limited. That makes the 2022 a strong used buy, since it matches the best rating of its generation.

2023 RAV4 Hybrid MPG

The 2023 RAV4 Hybrid MPG is also 41 city, 38 highway and 40 combined on most trims. The 2023 model year added the Woodland Edition, which is rated at 38 city, 35 highway and 37 combined. If you are looking at a used 2023, check which trim it is, because that three mpg gap is easy to miss.

RAV4 Prime MPG (2021 to 2025)

The RAV4 Prime launched for 2021 as Toyota’s first plug-in RAV4 of this generation. It pairs the 2.5-liter engine with two electric motors for 302 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive.

Here is the RAV4 Prime MPG picture:

  • Electric range: 42 miles on a full charge
  • Electric efficiency: 94 MPGe combined
  • Gas mileage after the battery runs out: 40 city, 36 highway, 38 combined

MPGe stands for “miles per gallon equivalent.” It measures how far the car goes on electricity using the same amount of energy as one gallon of gas. A Prime owner who charges every night and drives under 40 miles a day may rarely burn gas on a normal commute.

Gas-Only RAV4 MPG (2019 to 2025)

Before 2026, most RAV4s sold were gas-only models with a 203 horsepower 2.5-liter engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. RAV4 gas mileage for these models depends mostly on drivetrain and trim.

ConfigurationCityHighwayCombined
FWD (LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Limited)273530
LE AWD273430
XLE and XLE Premium AWD273329
Limited AWD253328
Adventure and TRD Off-Road AWD (through 2024)2532 to 3328

These figures are for the 2024 and 2025 models. Earlier years in this generation were within one mpg of these numbers. The Adventure and TRD Off-Road use a more complex all-wheel drive system, which costs a little fuel.

What the MPG Difference Means for Your Wallet

Numbers on a window sticker are easier to judge when you turn them into dollars. The table below uses 15,000 miles a year and an example gas price of $3.50 a gallon. Swap in your local price to get your own number.

RAV4 versionCombined MPGGallons per yearYearly fuel cost at $3.50
Gas Limited AWD (2019 to 2025)28536$1,875
Gas FWD (2019 to 2025)30500$1,750
Hybrid (2024 to 2025)39385$1,346
2026 Hybrid AWD (XLE Premium, XSE, Limited)41366$1,280
2026 Hybrid FWD43349$1,221

In this example, a 2026 RAV4 Hybrid with front-wheel drive saves about $529 a year over a gas-only front-wheel drive RAV4. Over five years, that is more than $2,600.

How Far Can a RAV4 Go on One Tank?

The fifth- and sixth-generation RAV4 Hybrid models use a 14.5-gallon fuel tank. Multiply that by the combined rating and you get an estimated range:

  • 2026 Hybrid FWD (43 mpg): about 620 miles
  • 2026 Hybrid XSE or Limited (41 mpg): about 590 miles
  • 2024 to 2025 Hybrid (39 mpg): about 565 miles
  • Gas FWD (30 mpg): about 435 miles

Real range is usually lower, since most drivers refill well before the tank is empty.

Why Your RAV4 MPG May Not Match the Sticker

EPA ratings come from standard lab tests, so every car is measured the same way. Your daily driving is different. Here is what moves your real number up or down.

Cold Weather

Cold weather hurts every car, but hybrids feel it most on short trips. The engine runs longer to warm itself and the cabin, and a cold battery cannot store energy as well. Many owners see a clear drop in winter and a rebound in spring.

Highway Speed

Unlike gas cars, a hybrid RAV4 is more efficient in the city than on the highway. Stop-and-go traffic lets the hybrid system recover energy when you brake. At 75 to 80 mph, wind resistance takes over, and mileage drops.

Tires and Roof Racks

Underinflated tires add drag and waste fuel. All-terrain tires, like those on the Woodland, also cost a few mpg. A loaded roof rack or cargo box can hurt highway mileage even more.

Driving Style

Hard acceleration forces the gas engine to work more. Smooth starts let the electric motors do more of the work, especially below about 25 mph.

How to Get Better Gas Mileage From Your RAV4

Small habits make a real difference. These tips work on every RAV4, from a 2019 gas model to a 2026 Hybrid.

  1. Check tire pressure monthly. Use the number on the driver’s door jamb sticker, not the one on the tire.
  2. Use Eco mode in town. It softens throttle response so the hybrid system can lean on electric power.
  3. Coast to stops. Lift off early and brake gently. The hybrid recaptures more energy that way.
  4. Remove the roof box when you are not using it. It is one of the biggest highway mpg killers.
  5. Stay on top of maintenance. Old oil and a dirty air filter make the engine work harder. Our guide on how to check oil level in your car takes two minutes to follow.
  6. Watch for warning lights. A check engine light can point to a sensor problem that quietly hurts fuel economy. Learn what each one means in our dashboard warning lights guide.
  7. Charge the plug-in every night. On a Prime or 2026 Plug-in Hybrid, an empty battery means you are driving a regular hybrid.

Which RAV4 Is the Best Choice for Fuel Economy?

The best pick depends on how you drive and what you can spend.

  • Best overall MPG: 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE, SE or XLE Premium with front-wheel drive at 43 mpg combined.
  • Best MPG with all-wheel drive: 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE or SE AWD at 42 mpg combined.
  • Best for short daily commutes: 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid SE, with up to 54 miles of electric range.
  • Best used value: 2019 to 2023 RAV4 Hybrid at 40 mpg combined, often for much less money than a new model.
  • Lowest priority on MPG: gas-only RAV4, which makes sense mainly if the purchase price is much lower.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the gas mileage on a 2026 Toyota RAV4?

The 2026 RAV4 is hybrid only and gets an EPA-estimated 38 to 43 mpg combined. The LE, SE and XLE Premium with front-wheel drive lead the lineup at 47 city, 40 highway and 43 combined.

What is the RAV4 Hybrid MPG?

It depends on the year. The 2019 to 2023 RAV4 Hybrid gets 40 mpg combined, the 2024 to 2025 model gets 39 mpg, and the 2026 model gets 38 to 43 mpg depending on trim.

What is the RAV4 Prime MPG?

The RAV4 Prime (2021 to 2025) gets 38 mpg combined on gas, 94 MPGe on electricity and 42 miles of electric range on a full charge.

Is the RAV4 Hybrid worth it over the gas model?

For most drivers, yes. A RAV4 Hybrid uses roughly 25 to 30 percent less fuel than a gas RAV4. At 15,000 miles a year, that usually saves several hundred dollars annually.

Does AWD lower RAV4 Hybrid gas mileage?

Only slightly. On the 2026 LE and SE, AWD drops the combined rating from 43 to 42 mpg. The rear wheels are driven by an electric motor, so there is no heavy driveshaft adding weight.

Why is my RAV4 Hybrid getting low MPG in winter?

Cold temperatures make the gas engine run more to warm the engine and cabin, and cold batteries hold less energy. Short trips in winter often show the biggest drop. Mileage usually improves as temperatures rise.

What gas does a RAV4 use?

Every RAV4 from 2019 to 2026, including the hybrids and plug-ins, is designed to run on regular 87-octane gasoline.
